I HATE THAT I LOOK SO UGLY IN THE VIDEO
The work interrogates the impact of digital technologies and social media on contemporary feminine beauty standards. The film examines the normalization of misogyny proliferated via the internet, investigating its systemic consequences on the female psyche and body, as well as its entanglement with capitalist power structures.
The piece scrutinizes misogynistic subcultures, specifically the "Incel" community and "Men Going Their Own Way" (MGTOW), analyzing how their ideologies are disseminated across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit. The work documents these toxic cognitive structures. Juxtaposed against this material is the constant flux of expectations imposed upon feminine-presenting bodies. Through a curated collection of video fragments, the work exposes the centuries-long societal objectification of the female form, tracing the violent interplay between historical precedents and the hyper-accelerated digital present.
The piece was funded by NRW KULTURsekretariat, Wuppertal, Germany
